It’s once again time for our usually-twice-yearly dose of MM-Eh as UFC is headed to Canada this weekend for the first of 2 Canada events this summer-in fact, 2 of the next 3 UFCs are up north. This weekend’s UFC 113 actually was planned for this past Saturday (May 1), but when boxing interfered in the form of Mayweather-Mosley on PPV UFC decided to move their event back a week to avoid going head-to-head. As usual 113 will be Canada-heavy even though Canadian posterboy Georges St. Pierre won’t be in action (you know he’ll be cage-side though) and will be headlined by the rematch of Ryoto (Lyoto) Machida vs. Mauricio Rua for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. When it comes to UFC the prognosticator has been hot & cold these last few PPVs (he’d rather forget the abomination that was a 2-9 WEC 48), he’ll try to get back to hot with this event. The long-rumored debut of WEC on PPV finally happens this Saturday night, and WEC & Zuffa are pulling out all the stops for the big premiere. The UFC commentating crew of Mike Goldberg & Joe Rogan and cage announcer Bruce Buffer will work the event, the fight card is loaded as usual and headlined by WEC poster boy Urijah Faber, and it’s in one of the WEC hotbeds-Faber’s backyard of Sacramento, CA. And Spike is even helping out by airing 2 of the prelims right before the PPV like they do with UFC. All that’s missing is our resident prognosticator’s predictions…until now. Click below.

For the next stop on the 2010 UFC World Tour, it’s off to the Middle East for the first time as UFC makes it’s debut in Abu Dhabi this Saturday afternoon. And it’ll be a loaded card with both Lightweight & Middleweight Title fights scheduled and the debut of another Gracie in the Octagon. After a bit of downtime we’re upon another great stretch of MMA-not one, not two, not three, but FOUR events in just 10 days starting this weekend! OK, 5 if you count Strikeforce Challengers, but here we’re not. It starts this Sunday with UFC’s first event on Versus featuring Brandon Vera vs. Jon Jones in a match of top Light Heavyweight contenders, then the following Saturday UFC returns to New Jersey for UFC 111 with Georges St. Pierre defending the UFC Welterweight Championship against Dan Hardy and Shane Carwin vs. Frank Mir for the Interim Heavyweight Championship and perhaps Brock Lesnar in July, finally it’s to North Carolina on 3/31 for UFN 21 featuring TUF 10 winner Roy Nelson’s “official” debut and the UFC return of former PRIDE Lightweight Champion Takanori Gomi. If you frequent MMA blogs and video channels you may know of a funny series of videos called “Riddum Revenge”, which take popular MMA stars and recent themes and turn them into ridiculously funny mashups. Just hitting the net today is the 7th such video, featuring Georges St. Pierre becoming Georges St. Pimp and trying his hand at the world’s oldest profession. G’day from down under, mates! UFC’s 2010 World Tour kicks off this weekend with it’s first trip do the land down under-Australia-for UFC 110 from Sydney. While there are no title matches it’s still a solid card headlined by Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Wanderlei Silva vs. Michael Bisping and plenty of Aussies on the card including, at long last, the return of The King-Elvis. Super Bowl weekend is upon us, which before the big game means UFC is putting together their annual pre-game big event, which doesn’t seem too big as it lacks a title fight and has been affected by the recent injury curse of the last couple months. But the show must go on anyways so it’s back to the mothership for this show before the 2010 UFC World Tour begins. Las Vegas hosts this Saturday night’s event, headlined by the “Hall Of Fame Over The Hill Bill” of Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman as part of an 11 fight card. Click below for predictions.
Comeback complete. Former UFC fighter Corey Hill, coming off a seemingly impossible recovery from a gruesome leg/foot injury in 2008, made a successful return to MMA over the weekend, beating Jason Trzewieczynski by unanimous decision at a Raging Wolf event this past weekend in Niagara Falls, NY. Hill was cut by UFC after the fight in which he was injured, a loss to Dale Hartt in December 2008.
Congratulations to Corey in this win, it’s so good to see him back in action and hopefully this is the start of the road back to UFC!
Although I’ve generally refrained from posting about the earthquake so far, mostly because I haven’t had a chance to look into all the charities (there are of course some very shady ones out there and I don’t want to direct people to those that will not help the victims), this video I am posting partly because it’s a request to the MMA community and fans and it comes from a good source-UFC fighter Wanderlei Silva. This is his message to his fans and colleagues:
Remember, only give to reputable charities/organizations like the Red Cross, UNICEF, etc. and do your homework first. This will help insure your donations go where they are needed most and will keep you from getting scammed/ripped off. Several legitimate charities are displayed at the end of the video.
It’s really nice to see athletes trying to give back considering how much they make compared to the rest of us, I have already seen what some NBA players are doing (if you haven’t heard about it already, go to Yahoo Sports’ NBA page and look for the column they wrote on 76ers center Samuel Dalembert and what he’s doing to help) and MLB has also made a donation (at least $1 million). If you watched yesterday’s NFL games you know at least a couple players were affected by this (namely Indianapolis star Pierre Garcon). I commend Silva for his efforts to help the earthquake victims, even though he’s a very dangerous fighter in the cage he has always come off as a genuinely nice person outside of it, someone who really cares about the fans and appreciates all their support.
