Well Guys, Here’s The Shot That Sums Up Last Night…

Posted by representingpuroresu on 08/16/2009

Yeah, you all must still be broken-hearted over what happened to your precious Gina last night. Don’t worry, she might get an immediate rematch or be in a determination tournament to see who’ll face Santos first. No, I wasn’t too upset about it-I picked Santos to win. Watched the fight this morning, nearly had another premature celebration! When it was stopped, I immediately thought back to Machida-Silva at UFC 94 with the buzzer-beating KO. And yes, we got proof Friday night that Mrs. Cyborg is indeed a woman-she pulled a prank on Scott Coker post-weigh-ins: Called him and told him that during pre-fight testing, they found out she was pregnant. Of course that was false. And funny. Just remember guys, it isn’t the end of the world. Besides, some guys like their women with muscles on top of muscles so it’s still all good.

Funny MMA Video Of The Day: Cristiane Santos Is A Beast!

Posted by representingpuroresu on 08/11/2009

At least in training. Remember that recent “Gina Carano vs. Satan” video? That Satan apparently has nothing on Cristiane Santos, especially if she does to Gina Saturday what she does here in training…and to her own husband (Evangelista “Mr. Cyborg” Santos, also a pro fighter)! Video after the jump. This is gonna be a crazy Saturday night!

Confuseyus: Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg Quick Predictions (Updated)

Confuseyus

It’s a historical night of MMA coming up this Saturday night as Strikeforce returns with it’s biggest show yet…if it holds together. Lots of injuries and other problems have plagued the card but hopefully it goes through and the first-ever women’s main event between the sport’s 2 biggest stars (at least outside of Japan) will finally get it on.
Because of various issues including uncertainty surrounding the card up until right when I did this, I will only be able to do quick predictions for the card. These are, of course, subject to change. (Updated 8/14)

Funny MMA Videos Of The Day: These Guys Get Choked Out So We Don’t Have To

Posted by representingpuroresu on 06/22/2009

Lucky b*stards. 2 videos actually, I thought I had put up the first one after I saw it recently but turns out I didn’t. So after the jump are a TV reporter getting an interview-and rear naked choke-courtesy of Cristiane Santos then a clip from FSN’s “Sport Science” with the show’s host-having already survived being legit RNC’d by Fedor Emelianenko-getting to live out one of our MMA fantasies-getting RNC’d by Gina Carano. Damn him, haha.

Shields Up: StrikeForce (Finally) Signs Former EliteXC Champion (Updated)

Posted by representingpuroresu on 02/18/2009

The pun in the title is a reference to said fighter, the former (and only) EliteXC Welterweight Champion-Jake Shields. He’s finally signed with Strikeforce. This is a mild surprise to me because Shields was reportedly holding out in large part because he seemed dead-set on heading to his ultimate goal-UFC. Reports are this signing averted a potential legal showdown and court battle, but if his last fight I saw (on the CBS EXC event when he defended the EXC title against Paul Daley) was any indication, I felt Shields was not ready for UFC. There’s no doubting his ground game is strong, but did you see his striking? He hit about has hard as Teddy Ruxpin would…that’s not very hard. In his career only 3 of his 22 wins have come by KO/TKO (he has 9 submission wins and 10 decision wins). True, you can get by without them-ask Demian Maia among others-but it never hurts. Shields will debut for SF on the upcoming April 11 event against former UFC veteran Joe Riggs, who will be dropping back to Welterweight after a Middleweight fight against Top 10 Middleweight Kazuo Misaki. He most recently fought in November, defeating Luke Stewart, considered one of SF’s top prospects. Shields will then have a summer fight, likely a main event against a “well known opponent”. If SF can keep him around this is a good chance for the promotion to establish a Welterweight division as well as a champion, which it doesn’t have. But if Shields can impressively win these couple fights it could also put him back on that fast track to UFC, so a potential double-edge here but a good move short-term for SF.

With this move, the 4/11 SF card currently looks like this:
Confirmed:
Frank Shamrock vs. Nick Diaz (Main Event), catch weight fight at 179 (Shamrock usually fights at 185, Diaz at 160 or 170)
Jake Shields vs. Joe Riggs
Benji Radach vs. Scott Smith
Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson vs. TBA for the title (the plan was KJ Noons, but that’s off as Noons is now focusing on boxing)
Gilbert Melendez vs. TBA, likely either Mitsuhiro Ishida or Jorge Gurgel

Rumored:
Gina Carano vs. Cristiane Santos. Right now only an outside shot that it happens here, the not-yet-announced May card (likely to be in Washington State and possibly headlined by Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Renato Sobral defending his title) or summer seems a little more likely. Either way, it’s finally going to happen soon the way things are going.

The main card portion of the 4/11 event will air live on Showtime.

UPDATE: The almost-full card for 4/11 was released late today by Strikeforce:
SF revealed the full (so far) 4/11 card today, it looks like this (fight order not confirmed):
Prelims:
Marcus Royster (320+ lbs., only prior fight was in ’05, a loss to Kimo) vs. Yohan Banks
James Terry vs. Zak Bucia
Eric Lawson vs. Richard Montoya
Raul Castillo vs. TBA
Luke Rockhold vs. TBA
Jeremy Tavares vs. TBA

TV fights:
Jake Shields vs. Joe Riggs
Scott Smith vs. Benji Radach
Frank Shamrock vs. Nick Diaz at catch weight of 179 (Main Event)
Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson vs. TBA for the title (possibly Mitsuhiro Ishida)
Gilbert Melendez vs. TBA
Cristiane Santos vs. TBA (probably not Gina Carano. Yet)

Announced for May in Tacoma, WA (tentative, no date yet):
Mike Aina vs. Billy Evangelista
Torrance Taylor vs. Lyle Beerbohm
Bao Quach vs. JC Pennington
Robbie Lawler vs. TBA

Rumored:
Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Renato Sobral vs. Rafael Cavalcante (Feijao) for the title
Gina Carano vs. TBA
Feijao has agreed to the Sobral fight, but SF has yet to talk to Sobral.
SF is to meet with Gina’s representatives this week if they haven’t already to find out when she’ll be ready to fight. The Santos fight could still happen in April, but that’s bordering on a longshot.
Other female fighters acquired by SF: Sarah Kaufman, Shayna Baszler, Debi Purcell, Jan Finney, Melanie Lacroix, Katrina Alendal. No Kaitlin Young (lost to Gina on first EXC CBS event). Strikeforce opted not to acquire Young out of a desire to develop lesser-seen fighters.
