Tragedy Strikes NFL Again: Bengals WR Chris Henry Dead

A very sad ending to what was quite a roller-coaster tale on and off the field: Cincinnati Bengals WR Chris Henry, seriously injured in an accident stemming from what appeared to be a domestic dispute, has died. He was declared dead earlier this morning. He was only 26. The AP story, this is still breaking as of about 10:15 AM ET:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry has died, one day after suffering serious injuries upon falling out of the back of a pickup truck in what authorities describe as a domestic dispute with his fiancee.

Police say Henry died at 6:36 a.m. Thursday. Henry was 26.

Away from the team because of a broken forearm, Henry was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after being found on a residential road. Police say a dispute began at a home about a half-mile away, and Henry jumped into the bed of the pickup truck as his fiancee was driving away from the residence.

Police said at some point when she was driving, Henry “came out of the back of the vehicle.”

Henry’s on and off-field issues were well-known. But in the last year or so it appeared he was making a very real effort to turn things around. Henry had been involved in a string of legal troubles during his professional career, which include several arrests for such offenses as driving under the influence, marijuana possession, assault, and criminal damaging. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2008 season. It ultimately led to him being put on waivers by the Bengals. But he returned the next season after sitting out his suspension. But he had generally stayed out of trouble this season and was showing signs of change both on and off the field.
Henry played in 55 NFL games, totaling 119 catches for 1826 yards with 21 TD.

The Deadskins Finally Do Something Right! (Updated)

Breaking news out of DC-WTOP Radio here in Washington and wtop.com report Redskins exec VP Vinny Cerrato is OUT. Resigned. Quit just this morning, a news conference is scheduled for later today. Long overdue, and perhaps a sign that “Riggo” (Redskins Hall Of Famer John Riggins) and his constant criticism of The Danny is beginning to pay dividends. The Danny should hire Riggo, he knows what he’s talking about and he’s still a popular figure in DC (but what former Redskin HOFer isn’t?) I’m certainly happy about this, another season lost but there’s time to start preparing for the offseason and next season, so I’ll be interested in the news conference and who the replacement is.

And finally, one request of the new guy: RE-HIRE FRANK HERZOG! The beloved radio play-by-play man was unceremoniously fired a few years back and replaced by Larry Michael. Herzog currently is a reporter and on-air anchorman at WTOP, where he has been for the past few years. And yes, he still gets to talk Redskins sometimes, but I’m grateful to WTOP for helping at least keep Frank on the radio. And he’s even done some moonlighting as an actor in movies.

UPDATE: The replacement is Bruce Allen. He is the son of legendary Redskins coach George Allen. He will be the team’s GM. No word on who will be exec VP.
