For my latest movie review covering titles I’ve picked up from the Far East, I’m briefly moving the focus from Japan a little west to China (and in the future I’ll be incorporating some martial arts cinema from Hong Kong in as well). If you’ve played certain video games over the last 20+ years, namely older titles like “Romance Of The 3 Kingdoms” or more recently any of the “Dynasty Warriors” series, or studied up on your ancient history, you may be familiar with the feudal dynasties of ancient China-specifically the time period of the Han Dynasty from roughly the year 175 to around the year 210. The time near the end of the Han is the focus of one of popular director John Woo’s latest films, and this one is truly being billed as an epic. Does it live up to the hype? Click below for my capsule review of Woo’s latest epic-Red Cliff.

Movie Review: Clash Of The Titans (2010)
Posted by representingpuroresu on 04/02/2010
First Friday nights usually mean appointments in the DC suburbs after a couple hours to eat, shop and chill. After all is said and done I usually try and take in a movie, when there’s nothing must-see I use my schedule and process of elimination to determine what I see. Tonight’s result of that is a quick capsule review of the latest mega-special effects extravaganza: Clash Of The Titans. The 2010 version.

Movie Review: Ninja Assassin
Posted by representingpuroresu on 03/28/2010
Time to do a little catching up on movies, both ones I’ve seen and will be seeing soon. Today I’ll start with the newest ninja flick to hit theaters, it first came out at Thanksgiving and was just released on DVD and now I’ve gotten around to seeing it. Here then is my capsule review of “Ninja Assassin”.

Movie Review: Voltron: Fleet Of Doom
Posted by representingpuroresu on 03/15/2010
Time to catch up on movie reviews, I’ve seen a couple new ones recently and another one will be coming up soon (likely Ninja Assassin, which I’ll get from iTunes Tuesday), so I’ll start with the latest cash cow in the recent revival of my favorite 80s cartoon/anime (of course I idn’t know at the time-hey, I was only 7!) and still one of my all-time favorites, back for the ultimate dream team pairing. So here it is, my brief review of the recently re-released “Voltron: Fleet Of Doom”.

Movie Review: Big Man Japan
Posted by representingpuroresu on 02/21/2010
As noted yesterday I did pick up a couple Japanese movies when I went to Borders Friday night. One turned out to be basically porn in disguise. The other one…was not. In fact, it could pass for an arthouse flick! It actually was one I’d seen before and thought a couple times about getting elsewhere but passed until now. So without further adieu here’s my capsule review of the other addition to my Japanese cinema collection-“Big Man Japan”. (Updated 2/22/10 with thoughts on DVD extras)

Movie Review: Sukeban Boy
Posted by representingpuroresu on 02/19/2010
Ah, Borders…truly a wonderful place to shop for books and DVDs. Especially if you’re looking for good foreign films-never know what you’ll find. Like this one I found today-tough biker kid blessed with a pop princess looks, sent to an all-girl school, up against every fanservice club imagineable…the things you find without trying sometimes! Hence this latest movie review straight from Japan-Sukeban Boy. Oh, before I forget, this is probably NSFW.

Movie Review: Gamer
Posted by representingpuroresu on 01/22/2010
A lot of us enjoy our video games. But imagine stuff like Second Life on a much bigger scale, where you’re playing a game but controlling a real person in a life-or-death MMO shooter where you can win freedom for your character…if he survives long enough. That’s kind of the premise for the latest movie I’m briefly reviewing here: “Gamer”.

Movie Review: Zombie Hunter Rika
Posted by representingpuroresu on 01/09/2010
It’s time once again to dig deep into the vault that is cheesy cult/slasher/horror flicks from Japan, as I added another one to my collection today. So what do you get when you add zombies, samurai, and cute Japanese schoolgirls together with a heavy helping of ridiculous? The movie I’m reviewing here, Zombie Hunter Rika.

Movie Review-Avatar
Posted by representingpuroresu on 01/09/2010
Since it’s the first Friday of the month (or was by this time) I took in a movie after my usual monthly business was taken care of…tonight I decided to buy into the hype and see what could be the #1 movie ever in terms of box office take before too long. Could James Cameron do it again? While it’s still fresh in my mind here’s my brief review of “Avatar”.

Movie Review: Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li
Posted by representingpuroresu on 07/02/2009
One of the things that sucks about where I live is not being able to see all the moves I want to when they come out without having to go nearly an hour away. The area I live in has 100K+ people, lots of malls, shopping centers everywhere, and all of just 9 crappy movie screens, although years ago we had 18. So I had to wait until this movie hit iTunes the other day to get it, but now I have it so here is my next movie review: Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li.

Movie Review: Tilt: The Battle To Save Pinball
Posted by representingpuroresu on 06/13/2009
I make no secret of the fact that my number one hobby/pastime is video games, past and present. I’ve alwys enjoyed studying and learning more about the history of video games, which date back to just before I was born (about the same time that “Space Invaders” came out). So when browsing iTunes the other day I came across a video game-themed documentary and immediately jumped on the chance to get it. Here then is my take on “Tilt: The Battle To Save Pinball”.

Movie Review: Sukeban Deka: The Movie 2
Posted by representingpuroresu on 06/11/2009
As promised, now that I’ve watched the first “Sukeban Deka” movie, it’s on to the second one in the series, which means more crazy yo-yo action & antics. Click below to read my review of the Japanese classic Sukeban Deka: The Movie 2.

Movie Review: Sukeban Deka: The Movie
Posted by representingpuroresu on 06/06/2009
As part of my continuing exploring of Japanese cult films and rather interesting films from the land of the rising sun, I today followed up my recent viewing of “Yo-Yo Girl Cop” with the movie it actually is a remake of. Time to go back to the 1980s for the movie that started the movie series and continued the franchise started by a TV show before it: Sukeban Deka: The Movie. (I also will be watching and reviewing the sequel, Counter Attack Of The Kazama Sisters, in the near-future)

Movie Review: Yo-Yo Girl Cop
Posted by representingpuroresu on 06/01/2009
In the latest of what is, for now, my series of reviewing “extreme/cult Japanese cinema flicks” that I’ve developed an interest in the last few months, I’ve watched and now reviewed a more recent one (2006) called “Yo-Yo Girl Cop”, which is interesting to me in part because it spotlights singers in the lead acting role. Does it deliver the “non-stop intense action” and is it “fast and furious” as it promises? Let’s find out.

Movie Review: Fanboys
Posted by representingpuroresu on 05/19/2009
Chances are that, if you’re under 40 like me, you’ve been a big fan of something in your life to the point you’d call yourself a “fanboy”. For me that’s a few things, but none in pop culture bigger than “Star Wars”, so I jumped on the chance today to finally see the appropriately-titled “Fanboys”. Strap in and prepare to go to a short time ago in a galaxy not so far, far away…
