It’s A Boy For One Of MMA’s Top Female Fighters

Although this may be a little late as it happened days ago but I didn’t just read it until now, as an MMA fan I’m taking this opportunity to send congratulations and best wishes to top Japanese female fighter Satoko Shinashi, who gave birth to a baby boy Sunday afternoon (early Sunday morning Japan time). The boy weighed in at just under 2500 grams (Japanese weight measurements are in grams and kilograms, the weight translates to just under 5 1/2 pounds) and both mother and son are said to be doing well. She has been out of action since October ’08 due to being pregnant but is already planning to return to action soon. No date is set yet though.
Shinashi, 32, is the current (and to this date only) DEEP Women’s Flyweight Champion (I think that’s a 96 pound weight class, Shinashi is a very small fighter-Sherdog lists her as 4’11” and 100 pounds) and sports a career record of 29-2-2 and is considered a jiu-jitsu wizard, as 23 of her 29 wins have come by submission. Her only losses are to Hisae Watanabe (1st round KO) in August ’06 and to Mai Ichii (Majority Decision, meaning 2 judges scored it for the winner-Ichii-but the 3rd judge scored it a Draw) in May ’08. She’s fought in Japan her entire career, which dates back to December ’01 and gives DEEP 2 of the top active female fighters in Japan along with DEEP Women’s Lightweight Champion Miku Matsumoto (sometimes just called Miku).
