UFC 98: The Main Event Rematch Is Off! (Updated)

Posted by dcrage on 03/07/2009

For now, anyway. The bad news broke last night-UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir has suffered a knee injury in training and so his rematch with Brock Lesnar for the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 98 in May is off, or at the very least postponed. There were early reports that it was a back injury, but Mir says knee. He reportedly  already had surgery last week with an estimated recovery time of 4-6 weeks and felt it wouldn’t leave enough time for training for the fight (roughly a month). So maybe worst-case is the fight gets pushed back a couple months, but it’s still a huge blow to plans for a highly-anticipated rematch. But then again, it could’ve been worse-had it been the back we could’ve been talking 4-6 MONTHS. We’ll see what happens, there’s been no official comment from UFC yet.

More on this as it becomes available.

UPDATE: According to MMAmania, the new date is July 11 at UFC 100. The 98 main event may now be UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans vs. Quinton Jackson or Ryoto (Lyoto) Machida for the title.

UPDATE 2: It’s scheduled to be Rashad vs. Jackson based on the outcome of the UFC 96 main event. Dana says both this and the new date for Mir-Lesnar are “likely but not definite” at this time. Mir confirmed what happened with his knee in an interview that aired during 96. Dana also says that if Rashad defends at 98 and Rampage can’t go for whatever reason, the “backup plan” is Machida, meaning he would FINALLY get his shot. I hope.
