A “Random Thoughts/Observations Of The Week” Post
Posted by dcrage on 01/12/2009
Taking the place of “The Week That Was” since, with football winding down, it was a rather slow week in sports but a fair amount of other stuff happening…
When I read the Golden Globe Award winners last night, I was happy to see “The Wrestler” deservedly win 2 out of 3 falls. It won Best Actor for Mickey Rourke and Best Original Song for “The Wrestler” by The Boss (Bruce Springsteen), but Marisa Tomei was denied Best Supporting Actress, which went to Kate Winslet aka Mrs. That Crappy Actor With The Ninja Turtle Name. I guess it was because Tomei’s performance wasn’t the most mind-blowing and the award’s for Best Supporting Actress and not Best Supporting Stripper/Dancer. OK, she wasn’t bad in The Wrestler but…well…she’s not my type. I was a bit disappointed it got shunned in the other categories especially considering it was THE best movie of the year. End of it. Don’t care about other awards handed out to those who didn’t deserve it and not starting on TV except for one thing-I still can’t stand Tina Fey.
The word is still the same as before…Bird Bird Bird, Bird Is The Word! I’m just so enjoying the Baltimore Ravens’ magical playoff run that now has them one win against Pittsburgh away from the Super Bowl. If they somehow win I might start a petition to change the team name to Baltimore Blue Hens-after all, Joe Flacco was a Blue Hen in college. Still not completely on the bandwagon because my boy Troy Smith still hasn’t gotten his fair chance, but the Ravens are winning, so who am I to complain? Not as long as my boy Ray Lewis continues to anchor the D.
Now that college football season is over I can catch up on the bowls I missed and downloaded from iTunes, an easy way to take them on the go. Nice to hear the legends like Pat Summerall one more time, and Brent Musberger did a great job for ABC & ESPN this year. One thing I do miss at The Rose Bowl-the incomparable Keith Jackson. He’s retired now…the game just isn’t the same without him. One favor for next year, ABC/Fox: Summerall should come back, but PLEASE let John Madden call one last game with him. I grew up listening to them call NFL games and they’re the best of the best…although I do like the “Moose & Goose” combo these days (Dick Stockton and former NFL players Darryl “Moose” Johnston and Tony Siragusa).
It’s not often that I find a video game that threatens to consume every waking hour I have access to my PS2. A couple weeks ago I found the next such one in Xenosaga. Got access to a PS2? Got about 30 bucks to spare? Get all 3 games, they are worth it. Only wish I thought about it earlier. Good thing I don’t have any pets, I probably would’ve renamed them names like KOS-MOS and MOMO by now. Xenosaga now takes up about 90% of my PS2 play time, with most of the rest going to Tekken 5. Games like this are the reason I haven’t invested in a PS3 sooner, PS2 games are now much cheaper and there are still lots out there. Plus the only PS3 game I’d even want now is Time Crisis 4. And since I don’t yet have a Triple Huh-Definition TV the Blu-Ray player is pointless. The TV might come this summer though, I’m looking to upgrade but want a not-too-big one to fit in my room (25-30 inches probably) and one that’s not too expensive, under $500 if possible, $400 even. They’re out there.
Eagerly counting down the days to Katsucon ‘09 February 13-15, the first anime convention I’ve ever gone to. Took me long enough, after years of passing on Otakon in Baltimore I finally find this and am pumped about going to check it out…but the real question is can I MAN UP enough to go check out their new “Maid Cafe”? Might have to have Confuseyus flip a coin there. But also looking forward to the experience in general over 2 days-yeah, it’s 3 days, but day 3 conflicts with the Daytona 500-very big no-no on my schedule. It’s the start of NASCAR season and I can finally get my Wendy Venturini fix again (PS-she looks a little older than she is…hard to believe she’s only 30!). And I’m calling it right now-like it or not, Jimmie Johnson will win the Sprint Cup for the 4th straight year.
Memo to sports leagues: Do away with fan votes for All-Star Games. Look to the NHL as an example. Enough said.
