The Week That Was: 12/15-21

Posted by dcrage on 12/22/2008

A not-necessarily relevant look back at the past week:

With their loss yesterday, the Detroit Lions kept their perfect season hopes alive, falling to 0-15. Rumors have surfaced that the Green Bay Packers, their opponents next week in the final game next week, are already living and training in pressure cookers to prepare for the intense pressure they will be under to win. There are also faint rumblings that the auto industry collapse has been tied directly to the Lions’ performance this year.

The Denver Broncos continue a classic collapse, blowing a chance to clinch the AFC West by losing to the ArgoIlls yesterday, meaning next week’s game vs. San Diego is Winner In, Loser OUT. Reportedly this collapse has been tied to Denver using tainted hibachi grills sold by Les Boulez of Washington, DC, G. Arenas, Proprietor.

Both Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield returned to the big stage, Tyson showing off his new physique and Holyfield coming up just short in a Heavyweight title fight.  Supposedly Tyson threatened to take a bite out of the judges if they gave Holyfield the win, hence the majority decision loss.

The Angels have dropped out of the Mark Teixeira race, suggesting that unless Boston’s playing sneaky or the Yankees swoop in and make an offer, Washington might be the frontrunner now. I’m preparing to eat my words if that’s what it comes to. Hopefully plenty of Old Bay seasoning makes it palatable.

Get Well wishes to Will Ribeiro, believed to still be in a coma after a motorcycle accident last week. The WEC fighter still had a promising career ahead of him despite a loss in his last fight. There haven’t been any new updates yet on his condition.

In Memoriam:
Justin Levens and Sarah McLean-Levens, both killed in an apparent murder-suicide. Justin Levens, an MMA fighter, is believed to have shot and killed Sarah before turning the gun on himself. Toxicology results are pending and won’t be known for a few weeks, but drugs may have been a factor as Justin Levens had problems with them before.

A melancholy Happy Trails to “Slingin’” Sammy Baugh, perhaps the greatest QB the Washington Redskins have ever had. Baugh passed away last week. He was an inaugural member of the Pro Football Hall Of Fame, played for the Redskins from 1937-1952, and is considered the father of the forward pass in an era when football was mainly about the running game.

And finally, given all the QB controversy surrounding the AFC Pro Bowl squad, I consulted that highly respected guru of the gridiron, Sports God himself, on who deserved most to go to the game. His answer: BRETT FAVRE. Because he’s THE Gunslinger and, frankly, I listen to way too much Max Kellerman.
